German music market scores growth in 2013

German music industry scored an increase in music market revenue in 2013. Data for 2013 show a modest 1% growth on year-on-year basis. Total revenue from digital and physical sales and streaming in 2013 was 1.45 billion euros ( 1.96 billion dollars). This puts Germany in front of UK in Europe. UK figures showed 1.04 billion pounds (1.27 billion euros) revenue in 2013.

This comes as no surprise as mid-year report was already promissing, showing a 1.5% increase. It's a good sign after 2012 3.2% decrease with a major 7.7% decrease in phyicals section. In 2013 however, digital market increased by 12% while physicals market decreased but only by 2%

Florian Drücke, managing director of the BVMI, says the most of the success is due to a successful holiday season and a big demand for physicals in the second half of the year. German artists gave a big contribution to the whole story with 7 of 10 biggest selling albums of 2013 coming from domestic artists.

BVMI (Bundesverband Musikindustrie) will publish detailed report in March.
